The internet has been abuzz since Sunday on the news that Rick Warren “has embarked on an effort to heal divisions between evangelical Christians and Muslims by partnering with Southern California mosques and proposing a set of theological principles that includes acknowledging that Christians and Muslims worship the same God” (source). Now it seems that Warren, who sits on the Tony Blair Faith Foundation’s interfaith Religious Advisory Council, is backtracking or is trying to cloud his intentions as to what he is attempting to accomplish through his interfaith P.E.A.C.E projects. Ken Silva has more about that at Apprising.
What I would like to briefly address in this post is the fact that Rick Warren signed a 2007 document published in the NY Times titled, A Christian Response to ‘A Common Word Between Us and You’. The following is an excerpt from the document, and clearly shows the Christian writers suggested that Christians and Muslims believe, serve, and love the same God:
What is common between us lies not in something marginal nor in something merely important to each. It lies, rather, in something absolutely central to both: love of God and love of neighbor. Surprisingly for many Christians, your letter considers the dual command of love to be the foundational principle not just of the Christian faith, but of Islam as well. That so much common ground exists – common ground in some of the fundamentals of faith – gives hope that undeniable differences and even the very real external pressures that bear down upon us can not overshadow the common ground upon which we stand together. That this common ground consists in love of God and of neighbor gives hope that deep cooperation between us can be a hallmark of the relations between our two communities…
…Abandoning all “hatred and strife,” we must engage in interfaith dialogue as those who seek each other’s good, for the one God unceasingly seeks our good. Indeed, together with you we believe that we need to move beyond “a polite ecumenical dialogue between selected religious leaders” and work diligently together to reshape relations between our communities and our nations so that they genuinely reflect our common love for God and for one another…
…We are persuaded that our next step should be for our leaders at every level to meet together and begin the earnest work of determining how God would have us fulfill the requirement that we love God and one another. It is with humility and hope that we receive your generous letter, and we commit ourselves to labor together in heart, soul, mind and strength for the objectives you so appropriately propose.
As a reminder, Rick Warren signed this document. Rick Warren is also the man who John Piper has given a full-fledged endorsement since 2010 by stating that Warren is “at root theological and doctrinal and sound” and has given Warren multiple platforms over the last two years for which Piper has affirmed his endorsement of Warren’s ministry.
As for “A Common Word Between Us and You“, I actually first covered this document in a December 2010 article titled, Global Peace, Stability, and Unity Through Interfaith Cooperation, where King Abdullah of Jordan highlighted “A Common Word” as being the backbone for future interfaith harmony between Islam and Christianity. So this is no minor issue and holds great significance as the world enters into a global pluralistic religious society that will ultimately morph into a global antichrist religion.
This brings us to the following transcript from the below 2008 video. In it, John Piper makes a clear and precise case as to why documents like “A Christian Response” are not helpful but hurtful to the Church and to unbelievers. It is deceitful in fact. My hope is that John Piper would consider his very words from just four years ago and how they might apply to his relationship with Rick Warren.
Will we hear from John Piper about Rick Warren’s continued push for Chrislam, and will Piper separate from Warren? Also, Piper mentioned in this video that he desires to prepare an alternative document that clearly proclaims the deity and authority of Jesus Christ the Son of God, that this new document would give us a basis for which Christian leaders can engage Muslim leaders based on the truth and love of Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Godhead. I am not aware that Piper has put an alternative document together, but now would be an appropriate time. This is what the Church, the invisible Church, the true Body of Christ, needs at this hour to fight this ecumenical and interfaith pluralism seeking to build unholy alliances between today’s apostate church and the world’s religions.
Now from John Piper:
The main thesis [of the “A Common Word Between Us and You”] was that love for God and love for neighbor is a common ground between Christianity and Islam…The main [response] that concerns me is…the one that was published in the NY Times back in November 2007…it’s called “Loving God and Neighbor Together, ‘A Christian Response to a Common Word Between Us'”.
And I just want to register publicly a disappointment with this document, in fact a profound disappointment with the way it is worded, and surprise at some of the people who signed it, some of my friends who signed who I would have thought would have been more careful in what they lend their support to, because what’s missing from this document is a clear statement about what Christianity really is and how we can come together to talk with Muslims from our unique, distinctive biblical standpoint.
It won’t work to simply say “you have a prophet, we have a prophet.” Which is really the way this document sounds. “We have a prophet that says love your enemies, you have a prophet that says love your enemies.” That’s how this document sounds. I’m sure the people that wrote this document do not believe that, but that is what it sounds like…
…So I just want to say that when we speak of the love of God and even quote a verse from 1 John 4 and don’t take into account the very next verse where the love of God that sustains us Christians is the love of God that sent the Son Jesus Christ into the world to be the propitiation for our sins, that’s the next verse, but not the one that’s quoted in the document, we are not…being honest.
We are not saying to the world that is reading this document that the love of God that we get strength from is the love of God uniquely expressed through Jesus Christ as the propitiation for our sins because He died on the cross and rose again, all of those things Islam radically rejects. So they do not believe in the God we believe in, they do not believe in the love of God that we believe in, they don’t beleive in the Son of God that we believe in, they don’t believe in the propitiation that He made for us, and to then talk in vague terms as if the love of God is a common standing place is to deceive, it is to be unclear at best.
Jesus is so crystal clear when He talks about this, “if you reject Me (Jesus said in Luke 10:16)…you reject the One who sent Me.” Muslims do reject Jesus Christ as the Son of God, Son of Man, crucified, risen Savior of the world. They reject Him, and therefore they are rejecting God.
We don’t stand together on a common love of God, or a common understanding of God. They don’t worship the true God according to Jesus. He who has the Son has life, He who does not have the Son does not have life. The Bible is so crystal clear that Jesus is the litmus paper as to whether or not we are talking about the same God…
…So all this talk about smoothing over these profound differences, and then using language to lead the readers of the NY Times and to lead the Mulsims to think that we really do have a common vision of love of God when we don’t even have a common vision of God, is not honest. It’s not helpful.
So I want to commend those who are stretching out their hands to Muslims. I want to write an alternative document than this one “Loving God and Neighbor Together”, and put Jesus Christ clear and lucid and unique and distinct and necessary like He should be, right at the center of the document – Who He is, Son of God, Savior, Son of Man, Sovereign King of the Ages, and then say, “we would love to sit down and commend this Christ to you as the basis of tolerance.”
We do not want strife, we do not want war, we do not want violence, we do not want hatred. We want to exalt Jesus Christ as the Son of God as the ground of why we don’t kill. We do not come killing as the way to win disciples. Jesus said, “if my kingdom were of this world, my disciples would fight. My kingdom is not of this world, therefore my disciples are not fighting.” Christians don’t fight to get people to believe in Jesus. That would contradict the very nature of the voluntary nature of saving faith in the Son of God.
So we would be happy to sit down with any Muslim group and commend Christ to them, and let them talk to us about their prophet, but we’re not going to smooth things over and talk in vague language about how we have the same God and the same love of God, call Mohammed a prophet, call Jesus a prophet, quote Scripture selectively so that it sounds just like the Koran, we’re not going to do that.
So may the Lord grant His Church today to be faithful to Jesus Christ as the Son of God, crucified, propitiating sins, justifying and giving righteousness to those who have faith in Him, and rising from the dead and reigning over the world, and coming again, and one day, every knee will bow before Jesus Christ and confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father, and those who have not bowed their knee before Jesus Christ Son of God and Savior and the unique representation and embodiment of the Divine and in whom the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily, those who haven’t bowed the knee will be cast into outer darkness. This is no small thing.
Oh may the Church be faithful to her witness to Jesus Christ. It’s the only loving way to lead people out of destruction and into everlasting life. These things are important. If you are involved at all in Muslim-Christian missions or dialogue, I pray, that you for the sake of Christ and for the sake of the lost, will speak the truth about the glory of the Deity and the crucifixion, and the death, and the resurrection, and the unique saving power of Jesus Christ.

Piper MUST know about Warren being an advisor on Tony Blair’s Faith Foundation. If a layperson as I know about it; then Piper must know! Why then has Piper declared Warren his “brother in Christ” and affirmed him as “doctrinally sound.”?
Oddly (maybe not so odd) , Piper spoke in Capetown (DEC 2010) at Edinburg 2010 conference- (on his ‘sabbatical). This “Lausanne” conference was also ecumenical.
We must be concerned; as ‘contenders for the faith’ (Jude 3), with Piper recently practicing “lectio divina” at Passion 2012! (standing alongside Beth Moore- who is a contemplative promoter).
What about Piper’s continued involvement with Acts 29 Network/ Mark Driscoll?
“I know that FALSE TEACHERS, like VICIOUS WOLVES, *will come in among you* after I leave, not sparing the Flock. Even some men from your own group will rise up and DISTORT THE TRUTH in order to draw a following. Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you—my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you. “And now I entrust you to God and the Message of his Grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself.” Acts 20: 29-32
“For such are FALSE APOSTLES, DECEITFUL WORKERS, transforming themselves into APOSTLES OF CHRIST. And no wonder! For SATAN HIMSELF TRANSFORMS HIMSELF into an ANGEL OF LIGHT.” Therefore it is no great thing if **his MINISTERS also TRANSFORM THEMSELVES into MINISTERS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS**, whose END will be according to their WORKS.” 2 Cor. 11:13-15
Beware of John Piper.
Also.. make sure we stand for Jesus and not any man we have held in high regard.

How can you say John Piper is any less than a true follower of Jesus Christ after watching that video and hearing his own words and conviction?

After reading the transcripts between Piper and Warren, I’m not too sure Warren even believes in the rapture of the church. There is no ‘urgency’ when it come to Warren and spreading the Gospel, his urgency seems to be that we aren’t going anywhere, so let’s have peace amongst all…sort of thinking and behavior. Does Piper even see that?

My understanding is that Warren is more of a Kingdom Now/Dominionist who believes the church can and must establish the Kingdom before Christ returns to take the throne.

Brother I agree . I think in this case we must be discerning of the Word of Rick warren & Piper and hold them both to the Word of God / Bible. I think we should pray for Piper I have noticed him embracing those like Warren & others and also the thing with Passion earlier this year with his ministry embracing the Lectio Divina during Passion 2012 (which i was there to see Piper participate) then all sudden retracting it from their website. I’m not sure what to think Bro on Piper anymore. it seems Piper says one thing one time and does different thinks at another. I just don’t know about Piper Bro. I will be praying for both though. God Bless you

I’m perfectly good with Piper lovingly rebuking, lovingly reproving, and lovingly correcting Rick Warren without having to (hard) separate from Rick Warren.

BUT— Piper has not done that at all. In fact Piper has embraced Warren, Driscoll, Beth Moore, Chan, and Giglio, and Acts 29 Network. Piper does not believe in a 6 day creation and affirms federal vision. so.. what IS John Piper?

Just ran across this discourse and am not sure what is doctrinally “off” with Beth Moore? I
can see the problem with Rick Warren not openly stating the divinity of Jesus Christ, but I do know that he is a “believer”. Yes, as a Christian we should openly declare our beliefs, it goes without saying that we should also “love our neighbor’, without judgment. Taking a stand and defending one’s beliefs are not the same as judging others. This is fundamental to Christianity.

Piper’s silence on this and other recent events in the evangelical world is deafening. Why the “cutting of slack” and giving him “a pass” based solely on past performance has become the accepted norm for some I do not understand. This is not one of those “non-essential” issues where it has been okay to come down on either side of the argument and still be considered a brother in Christ. [Whoever came up with the ‘list of non-essential issues’ is suspect to me anyway. Who is willing to tell the Holy Spirit which part of the Word of God is not an essential ingredient for the health and well-being of a believer? What arrogance!!!]. If Piper was such a staunch Christian just a few years ago, then why is he not even more rooted and grouded in the Word today? Perseverance to the end is just as much a part of salvation as is the cleansing from sin. Perhaps things are not as they appear to be. Maybe, just maybe some people have been fooled by JP. This is the acid test for Piper. The deity of the Lord Jesus Christ is being questioned by a man JP formerly counted as a faithful brother in the Lord. Silence is not an option. Silence = agreement. This is the acid test for Piper AND his supporters. And, yes, Piper MUST speak on this issue because of his prior support for RW.

In 2005, Rick Warren openly stated his philosophy of ministry @ the Pew Forum:

A long article, but it clearly lays out Warren’s mentors, methods, & message.

1. Rick was interviewed by the Christian post regarding the orange county article and supported on this site by Mr. Brandon Cox, his supporter in the ministry. So, naturally he is going to give responses that “tickle the ears”. I can just imagine Rick and the Christian post sitting down, drinking coffee, laughing, and taking it easy. To read his response, simply google “rick warren’s response to orange county article” and click on christian post article. What is unfair is that if another person or organization questioned him point blank and asked him questions about his contradictions in the PDL book and his beliefs, we know he would “break under pressure” and start telling one lie after another. It is an injustice when people are deceived to thinking his “interview” with the Christian post does “justice” to his beliefs. We very well know if he was interviewed by a source such as the many faithful ministries that have exposed his heresies, he would not have given honest answers, only lies and contradictions. Additionally, Rick was asked questions that only made him feel comfortable. Of course, he is going to flatly reply when asked such questions such as “Tell us the truth about your ‘global PEACE plan and does it involve partnering with Muslims.” However, if you or I pulled out the PDL book, quoted him in an interview, and asked him how he can host three doctors supporting new age/eastern mysticism in his church, despite claiming that New age is a lie in his book, he would be exposed like everything. It is time people and ministries give him an interview that asks the hard questions exposing his heresies and posts it on the internet to find out he is nothing more than a liar and a wolf in sheep’s clothing!
2. Take time to read the comments from “Mick” on the comment section below the article (on christian post response of Rick Warren). He makes a good point – how can you claim RW is not involved in Chrislam and is not partnering with Muslims, yet he signs a response with 300 other evangelicals on the “common word between us and you” document. To sign your name officially on such a said document says that you support the belief system of such a document that says the God of the Koran and the God of the Bible are the same god. NOT! Rick Warren needs to stop pointing fingers and playing the “blame game” when he knows full well he is in error and is completely wrong. The facts speak for themselves “Pastor” Rick Warren. The proof is in the pudding.
3. RW’s response on the question regarding eating a dinner with Orange country muslims exposes his belief system. He even admits that he hosts a potluck dinner after the muslims have completed Ramadan (30 day period of fasting in Islam). Basically, he admits eating with muslims and hosting events to “befriend” them, but nowhere in his response does he share teaching the FULL GOSPEL message of Jesus Christ to muslims he has met who are on their way to an eternity in hell unless they repent of sin and place trusting faith in Jesus Christ. What more can we say brothers and sisters in Christ? RW can run all he wants from the truth, but ultimately, regardless of how many people applaud him, he will spend eternity in hell for his lies unless he repents and gets it right before it is eternally too late. RW may be able to fool some people who do not read God’s word and are not seeking God, but he cannot fool God who knows everything and his motives for lying.

Piper talks about being honest and telling the world that we can only get God’s love through Christ and communicating that to muslims. He says all this on the video. The video is very good and I agreed with all he said, but why does he not take a stand against Rick Warren and call him out on this? I find his endorsements of Rick Warren and Bruce Wilkinson a huge warning to me though. The longer I live the more I see we must be careful of anyone who preaches. We must be Bereans and search the Scriptures. Do not follow any man or woman. Follow Jesus Christ!

I don’t care for John Piper and I never have. He is currently teaching Lectio Divina which is very unbiblical. He continues to join hands with Rick Warren who is a heretic. Anyone who is supporting heretics even if he is a brother or sister in Christ, we are commanded to have “nothing to do with them”-Ephesians 5:11.

It seems to be quite a trend to partner with Muslims, or try to dialogue with them to somehow reach them. Reach them for what is not made clear. Those who are doing this are naively and foolishly thinking that everybody is good at heart and all we have to do is talk together in order to understand each other and somehow this is going to solve the problems. They should not be surprised though when youths and others who are even more naive than they are subsequently follow the Muslims into their religion, instead of anyone coming to Christ. Satan instigated the fall of man through a dialogue with Eve. We are warned over and over again not to be deceived. Some in leadership are foolishly ignoring these warnings and going headlong into error and spiritual danger. Sadly, many are following them right into the trap.

Did Warren even mention Jesus in his “talk” to Muslims?
Not so much Chrislam, as it is common ground they share to NOT announce Christ as Lord!
See below Warren’s 2009 Gospel-Free Presentation to Muslims.
His reference to Jesus in context: You know that obviously as an evangelical pastor, my deepest faith is in Jesus Christ. But you also need to know that I am committed not just what I call the “Good News,” but I am committed to the common good. And as the Scripture says “Love your neighbor as yourself.” I am commanded to love and I am commanded to respect everybody. Everybody. Now I was asked to speak to you about how Muslims and Christians can work closer together for the greater good, in our world. And I will tell you that I am not interested in interfaith dialogue, I am interested in interfaith projects….
