What is the model church? Where should you worship? What are the characteristics of a faithful church? Is your church God-centered, Christ-exalting, and Gospel-driven? How do you know if it is? What do you do if it’s not?
The following message from Steven Lawson at the final Resolved Conference last weekend is something every Christian should hear. Especially in this age of postmodern, seeker friendly, relevant, man-centered, carnal churches with a low view of God, low view of Scripture, and skewed view of man, it is imperative we gather for worship with like-minded believers with a high view of God, a high view of Scripture, and a proper view of man. Only then are we in a place of worship that most glorifies our Sovereign Lord, most edifies God’s people, and most equips us for the work of Gospel ministry through the teaching of sound doctrine and a biblical understanding of discipleship.

I can’t disagree with what Mr. Lawson taught here. I do think it’s foundational and should begin a more detailed discussion of what the assembly looks like in the light of Scripture. I would love to see more churches throw out the pews and podiums in favor of following the Head, Christ instead of looking just to the pastor. Pastors are important for new believers, but it seems some of the other elders are held back or diminished or thrown out in favor of man centered leadership. The assembly was meant to be for almost everybody to bring something as the Lord led. Instead I have heard of churches using questionnaires to determine ones gift rather than walking in the Spirit. I encourage a careful re-reading of I Corinthians for starters. They sure seemed like a messed up bunch. But Paul was careful to give the assembly organization and structure led by Christ in the Spirit.
